We are a small household in the village of Oxshott, Surrey, England. The house consists of Dominic, a 37 year old wheelchair user, and Marc, his 46 year old friend & carer.
Marc is a self employed graphic designer and part time care in the community worker. Dominic is not working because of his disability. We both have busy separate social lives, plus we socialise together. Dominic relies on carers for him to be able to continue his social life and for certain tasks indoors, especially his morning routine. His disability is quite severe as far as his mobility is concerned (he is a young stroke survivor). Marc or other carers help him out daily not only with his essential routine, but also companionship and social events.
We are both fun loving and youthful people (for our age) and enjoy music, movies, chat & laughter, the occasional glass of wine or two. We frequently head out to some of the largest venues in London (25 minutes away) for music gigs and various other shows. Locally there is some beautiful countryside to enjoy, especially in the summer months.
We are looking at having two helpers stay with us in the spare rooms upstairs. It is important to us that our helpers have the ability and willingness to assist with the care duties and occasional companionship for Dominic. Someone with previous caring experience would probably be most suitable, although anyone with a positive attitude towards this type of work should be able to cope. (There is no personal care involved in the tasks). This will usually be a shared task between the helpers, who will be provided with adequate training from Marc or other carers. Marc is often away or working so the helpers would be expected to take care of Dom on their own with no assistance from the other careers. This will only be expected after a week or so of settling in.
The vital tasks are carrying out the morning routine, which is helping Dominic get up in the morning, food preparation etc. There is a care routine manual with full instructions.
Other work could be driving Dominic to events in London, to which the helpers will always get a complimentary ticket. These events can range from rock gigs to classical music events, Stage shows to Live comedy. A full cultural experience for someone to enjoy.
It is important that the helpers will be willing and able to prepare an evening meal, this can be a combined effort between them. Marc will be able to contribute to these tasks depending on his work load.
Above all we would like the helpers to integrate into the lifestyle and social calender of our household.
The helpers would be staying in 2 single bedrooms upstairs, with use of other communal areas, the downstairs lounge with Dominic and also the back garden.
