The Free School is a charity organization founded by an American veteran and his Vietnamese colleague in 2014. The school provides minimal administrative fee English language instruction to Vietnamese of all ages. This year, The Free School partnered with the National University of Forestry and has relocated to the university here in Xuan Mai. We now teach in the English department of the university, in the university's Advanced English Program and at the Center for Training and Abroad Studies where we conduct a community outreach program. That program provides no fee instruction to disadvantaged children and young adults from the community. Others can enroll in the 12 hour per month course for a fee of 150,000 vnd ($6.00 U.S. per month).
As a volunteer, you'll receive an invitation letter from the university to present to Immigration on arrival in Vietnam. You'll receive a work/intern visa which entitles you to a room, a meal allowance, access to the university pool, gym and library and free transport by private car from the airport to the university.
Xuan Mai is located near the border of Hoa Binh province in a mountainous, forested region 40 kilometers west of Central Hanoi. The majority of those attending our school are students from farm families who cannot afford the expense of studying with native English speakers.
Being conversant in English is critically important for every student's career. The school places great emphasis on speaking skills, especially pronunciation.
Volunteer teachers supervise conversation groups of 15 to 20 students with the assistance of an English speaking Vietnamese. Teachers monitor conversations which begin with a scripted set of questions. The students are required to develop follow up questions of their own with the teacher correcting grammar, pronunciation and word usage as the conversation evolves. Teaching experience is helpful but not required.
A minimum stay of six week is required.
