Volunteers live in western style accommodations in private or shared rooms with kitchen privileges in Mamallapuram, about 50km south of Chennai, the Capital of Tamilnadu and work with Dalit and Irular Tribal women and children in the areas of spoken English, literacy, hand embroidery, construction, computers, sports, arts and health and more or develop a project of their own! We prefer mature volunteers who are able make a commitment of 6 weeks to 6 months, are able to work 20-30 hours a week. Volunteers are expected to be able to pay for their own room and board although exceptions can be made based on need and skills offered. We have been working in more than 25 villages in the local area since 2005 and currently operate 24 after school centers, a clinic, 5 women's vocational sewing and hand embroidery project and have constructed over a dozen community centers to house these programs and much more. Competency in English is required. Mamallapuram, AKA Mahabalipuram, is a medium sized town with a World Heritage designation, located by the ocean, near a metropolis, and has a significant ex-pat population that ensures you will have plenty of leisure time activities.
