Hey there,Avasar Shala is Hindi for Opportunity Center. Avasar Shala is a non-formal learning center for street kids living at Sealdah Train Station in Kolkata, India. Avasar Shala, as the name itself suggests, is a center which will provide opportunities to kids who are often mistreated and ignored by society.
We ask that volunteers have a clear idea of the duration of their stay and to spend at least 2-4 weeks at Avasar Shala. The classroom is open on T, W and F from 11:30 - 5:30.
If you have a workshop you would like to lead or a skill to teach the kids please have a clear understanding of the duration of the project, the material and setup that will be needed, the age range it is appropriate for and the learning outcomes that the students will gain.
We also ask that volunteers have a clear understanding of the expectations of working with this demographic of children. Volunteers need to be empathetic, patient, non-judgmental, and to communicate in a clear and respectful manner to show our students how to be respectful.
