Yerba Santa Goat Dairy, Lakeport CA
Report
Location: Lakeport, CA, United States
NOTE: we have volunteers until June 2014
My family and I own a goat dairy farm and we will be very happy to share and exchange our experiences on an artisan goat cheese dairy and an organic walnut orchard. We are located in Lake County, California, a beautiful area, 3 hours north of San Francisco. The farm is surrounded by creeks, lakes, mountains and wilderness areas. We are a small dairy of 20 acres and a herd of 80 goats. We make fresh and aged goat cheeses (artisan) and sell them mostly through farmers markets. Volunteers are needed mainly from March through November with a minimum stay of a few months. They would be involved in the daily milking, cleaning, maintenance, fencing, irrigation, cheese making, packing, farmers' markets. volunteers would be expected to work six hours a day. Accommodations are wheel trailer or a tent. Activities other than those involving the dairy would be gardening, baking and if you like, hiking, fishing and water skiing. We speak English, Spanish, and French (fluently). We would consider volunteers with children and/or pets. A car is recommended as it is somewhat isolated but carpooling is possible.
