We always have several projects to work on, as we are doers and homesteaders, but we wish to also pass on what we have learned over the decades to the younger generations. At the moment we are building boxes for box gardening, producing firewood for the winter, and preparing for our next major project, which we hope to start next year: tearing down the old goat barn and rebuilding it as an addition to the house, so we can host more people in the future. It will be a post-and-beam/cordwood construction on a stone foundation. Getting older we definitely could use help with all of the above. Additionally, we can help you with English & German language skills (including creative writing), teach you weaving and fiber arts, stonework, organic gardening, land (and everything else) stewardship, art skills, gluten free cooking and baking, critical thinking etc.

WORKING ARRANGEMENT

We will treat our volunteers like family and work alongside them as we strongly believe in teamwork and collaboration (and close-knit community). Tasks might include firewood production, gardening, building, help with our sawmill, creating useful items, all depending on season. We'd also appreciate new ideas and positive critique, esp. for Hardy's writing and art work. You will never be asked to do something you feel uncomfortable with, and we don't expect you to work more than 20 hours a week.

LIVING ARRANGEMENT

We have one basic guestroom at the moment, with a twin bed. An additional airmattress can be provided, or a tent if you wish to enjoy the outdoors at night. Conventional bathroom is shared, and we have a separate composting toilet for our personal use also, so there is no uncomfortable waiting time... We have a gluten free and mostly grain/milk products/egg based diet, so if you crave meat all the time you are on your own to get some, though you are welcome to prepare it here. Please let us know of any food restrictions/sensitivities and we will try to accomodate these. In the cold months we cook on a wood stove and heat with wood. Our property is about 3 miles from town in the woods, so you would need a vehicle if you wish to explore the area. The Adirondack Park we live in has a lot of natural attractions you might enjoy. When we have time we could show you some with our small car if you like.
