The Common Unity Project is an aspiring intentional Community located on the Salmon inhabited Bulkley River in Hazelton B.C. Right now we are three full-time members with several other supporters at varying levels of commitment. We are located close to town on a beautifully diverse 160 acre paradise with rivers, creeks, rocky cliffs, undulating pasture and other gifts of nature’s abundance. We have a cozy main cabin that acts as a central area where food is prepared and eaten. We are 100% off-grid, we do not have running water, we catch rainwater and haul drinking water, we have compost toilets, and limited shower and internet access. We are big on sustainability, natural building and permaculture design. We strongly value egalitarianism, self-awareness and ecological justice.
We would ultimatly like others to view their experience as working WITH us and not FOR us. We cook together and eat together and everyone works together to get duties done; we prefer to operate as equals, where everyone takes initiative in performing the day to day demands of housekeeping food prep, dishes, woodsplitting, etc. We expect wwoofers to contribute 5 hours a day, 6 days a week.
We commonly have campfires and friendly visits during the evenings and musical jams often ensue.
We have more pictures on our website and here:
This year we would ideally like to accomplish:
Beginning construction on our communal building: The HIVE: A Hybridized Earthship Design
Finishing our woodworking shop
Offering a cob oven building workshop to the community where we will build a cob oven outside our cabin
Potentially aquiring a dog and goats and chickens
Building trails and dry stacking stones
Experimental permaculture/ bio-intensive gardening, food preservation, as well as learning more about our micro-climates, soil structure, availability of wild edible/ medicinal plants, etc
We are also open to others taking on projects that may benefit the whole, if they are so inspired. Our ultimate goal is to establish working functional examples of a truly rewarding, naturally integrated lifestyle. We wish to move away from a society that promotes an everyone-for-themselves individualistic mentality, and create a new one that works for all of us and all life. Where the needs of one are the concern of all. Where we live as a family and interdependently empower each other to redefine the very nature of whats possible.
A little about the members:
Darren: A devoted father of four. Darren is a remarkable dude, who effectively uses clear communication and unconditional love to cultivate meaningful connections between himself and all life around him. He often dreams of riding a horse and carriage over the Hagwillget suspension bridge, full of fresh veggies, to sell at our local farmers market.
Martin: Is a multi-lingual German, who spent 3 years learning the teachings of Toltec shamanism before he departed on his Canadian Wwoofing journey. He wwoofed himself into a permanent home here and is fully dedicated to our vision. He has a big heart and an intelligent mind, and he will be sure to finish every last piece of food on your plate before he sees it wasted.
Timber: A well intended rebel with a cause, cause being for humanity. Chris is a builder extraordinaire with a passion for natural building and reusing salvaged materials. He definitely gathers what other people spill and creates magic with it. Chris shapes dreams into reality.
Sweet Gum: An anarchist who lives to the beat of mother earth. She is a healer and provider on many levels and has a wide knowledge of wild, medicinal herbs and their uses in healing. She’s always looking into how we can provide for ourselves from the abundance that surrounds us. She’s a creative builder and artist and will give you a massage that will make you cry and float as the same time.
The Hazelton Area.
The Hazeltons are situated in a truly monumental setting (15 hours north of Vancouver) dominated by the 3000’ walls of the rugged Roche de Boule mountain Range. A ‘must see’ for those traveling through this majestic playground. In this community compromised of about 5000 people, you will find locals are very friendly and eclectic. You will be sure to meet some of the many unique characters in town who love to share stories with those willing to lend an ear.
Hazelton has a very rich history. The Gitxsan first nations are the majority population of the Hazelton area, with the rest being Wet'suwet'en or of European descent. 'Ksan Historical Museum and Village creates an almost magical experience for visitors to learn more about the Gitxsan traditions. Visit 'Ksan, a Gitxsan village from the 1800s, and tour the totem poles and longhouses on site to understand how the people here once lived.
Since the 1860’s bustling pioneer communities have also arisen around the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers. This unique sharing of an unequalled wilderness setting has made the Hazeltons the Historic Heartland of Northwest BC.
Good luck on your endeavours!
