Construction & Renovation Volunteers Needed in Ghana

St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation is a recognized local nonprofit/charity organization based in Ghana. The projects of the foundation are Teaching, Childcare, Healthcare, Farming, Social Work, Sports and Community Development Projects of children. The work of the foundation is carried out by a dedicated local hardworking staff and incredibly supported continuously by both local and international volunteers/interns from all over the world. The Mission of SMWEF is to bring together individuals from around the world to make a positive impact on local communities in Ghana. To create a conducive and supportive environment to empower and transform lives and communities in a positive way.

About the program

This program focuses on the construction and renovation of orphanages, clinics, schools, toilet facilities, libraries, community centers etc... This is an ideal project for short term volunteers, no skills are required and you are able to make a significant contribution even if you are only staying a week. Volunteers also have the opportunity to meet community elders and learn about the various cultures of the different communities through drumming, music and dance. Volunteers work closely with local people and SMWEF Ghana staff on tasks which includes painting, brick laying, block shaping, carpentry, steel bending, plastering, mortar mixing etc... Volunteers on this program should bring gloves, flashlight and lightweight scarf for sun protection or hat, insect repellent, working boots and water bottle. Please note this project has an additional fee of US$ 40 per week for construction and renovation materials that are used during the project. Program is suitable for 16 and above.

Typical day

The tropical Ghanaian climate is hot and humid with the temperatures reaching over 30 degrees at midday, because of this you will start work at 8 o'clock am and around 2 o'clock pm with a 20 min break around mid-morning. Depending on the building progress you might dig and set foundations, use a press to build bricks out of mud and water, mix cement using shovels, build walls brick by brick or assist with the construction of the roof. After the construction is done, you can plaster the and pain the walls, design murals or help with land scaping in the garden. In the afternoon, you can choose to relax or help out with community initiatives such as the reading club for children or sports activities.

Weekends

In your free time, you can visit Cape Coast and learn more about about the countrys history of slave trade by visiting the castles and museums in the area. With warm weather year round, Ghana is also perfect if you had like to spend the day relaxing on the beach or exploring one of the many national parks.

WORKING ARRANGEMENT

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities:

Under the community development volunteer project in Ghana, volunteers will have the opportunity to work on several construction projects. A day to day work for the volunteers under this program would include;

• Volunteers who are willing to do some physical work can assist in the construction project either school building, libraries, toilet, drainage systems, community centers, ICT lab etc.
• Volunteers work along with local people with tasks includes paintings, brick laying, block shaping, carpentry, steel bending, plastering, mortar mixing, fetching of water, electrical works, digging drenches and bricks molding etc.

Working Hours: Volunteers mainly work from Mondays to Fridays. It starts around 8am and ends by early afternoon or late afternoon depending on the progress of the work and two (2) days off for relaxation. In all, 25 hours a week.

LIVING ARRANGEMENT

Accommodation is provided all year round. Our host families are carefully screened, socially respected and experienced with hosting international volunteers. Wherever you stay, your accommodation with SMWEF is safe, clean and comfortable. In most cases, you will share a room with volunteers (of same gender).
Volunteering in Ghana through St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation is extremely affordable, you only contribute your meals, airport pickup to book and confirm your placement. As a volunteer participant, you are also responsible for your flight, visas, and living costs. We appreciate your time and allow you to use your compassion and skills to help make the world a better place.

Requirements

• Minimum: In order to join the program, you need to be 18 years old on the program start date.
• Language Skills: You need to speak English (basic level)
• Education Requirements: English, Art, Maths, ICT at High School minimum level
• Volunteers on this program must be 18 years and above on the program start date and duration.
• Volunteers on this program must be fluent in English to be able to communicate with the local people and must come along with bundle of energy.
• Volunteers on this program must have at least a high school educational background.
• No prior requirement is required for this program. Volunteers must be able to understand and communicate with children and adapt to the environment and be flexible to learn and experience the culture in Ghana.
